sweat

Written by Lisa Marie Wark, MBA*

Sweat is what legends are made of, but you don’t want to be the legendary sweater. Starting around junior high school you begin to realize that you are in for the fight of your life in the battle against perspiration, with your first goal as trying to avoid being named in the yearbook as “Most likely to sweat”. Most of us, early on, will have found simple relief from perspiration with regular over-the-counter antiperspirant deodorant. However, there are many who will battle severe perspiration with little hope of winning, until now.

Botulinum, believe it or not, is an effective treatment against severe perspiration problems, or Hyperhidrosis. Regular sweating occurs during exercise, warm weather, or the day you get married. Hyperhidrosis is irregular and excessive sweating for that occurs for no reason at all. It emanates primarily from your underarms but can also affect the hands, feet and groin. Botulinum injections block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. No signal, no sweat.

Dr. Danka K Michaels, the Medical Director for Blue Point Medical Spa says that Botulinum injections are a God send for a number of her patients. “Hyperhidrosis is very disruptive to a patient’s life. They can literally drip sweat at any time. It soaks clothes, creates embarrassment, and is an overall miserable condition”, explains Dr. Michaels, “and Botulinum has brought relief to many of these patients in the treatment areas.”

While it was kind of funny when George Carlin said, “Don’t sweat the petty things, and don’t pet the sweaty things”, people who suffer from Hyperhydrosis often get to the point of desperation in order to find relief. Botulinum isn’t a cure but it is an effective treatment for at least six months for patients who undergo this treatment.

An actual treatment should take no more than fifteen minutes. Botulinum is injected with a fine needle in the underarm area (about fifteen injections). It’s not uncommon to have some side effects to the for there to be some side effects to the Botulinum injections which include some discomfort and bleeding in the injected areas, as well as headache, fever, and neck pain. It takes about four weeks to see improvement.

It’s important that there is a consultation with a doctor before using Botulinum. There is a chance that a patient may be allergic to Botulinum and not able to tolerate it. Also, the treatment may not be appropriate if a patient suffers from certain muscle diseases, pregnancy, or bleeding problems.

Don’t sweat the small stuff. In fact, don’t even sweat the big stuff. Your relief from Hyperhidrosis could only be a Botulinum treatment away. Call Blue Point Medical Spa today for a free consultation today at 702-685-1300.
