What is Beauty?

Def: The quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest)…. Such is a definition I found on the internet.

Beauty has varied throughout time, various cultures and the vast different perceptions of the world. Beauty has been described and depicted through pictures and concepts penetrating our minds. Beauty has been defined in many, many ways.

The old adage “ the beauty is in the eyes of beholder” is an absolute measure of this esoteric quality.

Because of individual perception of beauty, we women are put in a precarious situation. Do we mold ourselves into what is the “hot” image of the reigning “queen” or do we remain true to our own image? Do we leave it be, or do we fight the aging process every inch of the way?

And we have a lot of weapons to choose from. From a simple facial with a peel – which in medical spas is always at the medically prescribed concentration individually chosen as per your particular needs, to dermabrasion, multiple lasers, deep ultrasound, radiofrequency and injectables.

After reading some statistics about cosmetic procedures, I realized that there is a huge difference between certain demographics. The younger women lean towards more preventative measures : botulinum toxins, peels, dermbrasions, photo facials, rarely fillers, whereas the older population uses the heavy duty artillery.  Fillers are #1, followed by toxins and skin tightening procedures through lasers, RF or US.

How do you choose? How do you know that this particular procedure is really what you want?

It is pertinent to find a place and a team that is clinically oriented, has the experience, and is either close to your age or older and have all of these modalities available. That way you are not pushed into only one procedure that the spa offers.

Most of us in the aesthetic industry will offer a consultation for free. Although a great way to figure out how will you feel/are treated in a particular establishment, is to schedule a simple facial treatment and use the time to discuss with your aesthetician other options that you may benefit from. Then decide if you want to pursue the treatment plan.

The consultant should give you information about your skin type, which type of facial, peel, cosmetic line you need for daily life and how to improve the quality of your skin and other concerns you may have.

We have progressed from treating face to treating the whole body. The back scrubs, body scrubs, aromatic oil massage, RF skin tightening, cold laser fat reduction, cupping, fascia-blasting to reduce appearance of cellulite….all of these modalities should be found in a high quality medical spa.
